Background & Experience

Jeff has been facilitating 1031 exchanges since February 1990 and practicing law since 1987. In 2003, he was among the first professionals in the country to receive the Certified Exchange Specialist™ (CES) designation from the Federation of Exchange Accommodators and remains the first CES in the South Puget Sound area.

Dual Expertise: Attorney & Exchange Specialist

This dual expertise as both an attorney and exchange specialist allows Jeff to provide a comprehensive perspective that helps real estate investors understand both the legal and financial dimensions of their transactions. His deep knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code's 1031 exchange provisions — combined with decades of legal practice — offers a level of integrated counsel that is difficult to find elsewhere. Where most Qualified Intermediaries can process the paperwork, Jeff can analyze the tax code, identify structural risks, and advise on the legal implications before you close.

Peer Recognition

Jeff holds Martindale-Hubbell's AV Preeminent® rating — the highest peer review rating for legal ability and ethical standards — with a 4.8 out of 5.0 score from 36 peer reviews and 100% client recommendation. He has been recognized as a Client Champion Silver 2026 for outstanding client review ratings. These ratings are based on confidential evaluations by attorneys and judges who have observed his work firsthand.

Legal Career Highlights

Jeff's legal career extends well beyond 1031 exchanges. He served as local counsel in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, a landmark U.S. Supreme Court First Amendment case decided in 2022. He is a member of WealthCounsel®, a national network of estate planning attorneys committed to sophisticated planning techniques and continuing legal education. Through The Helsdon Law Firm, PLLC, he also provides estate planning, business succession, and real estate law services — giving his 1031 exchange clients access to a broader range of legal expertise when their transactions intersect with estate or business planning needs.

“No consultation fee. If you're considering a 1031 exchange — or wondering whether one makes sense for your situation — call and we'll talk through it.”
